down from 6 pm on the evening of December 9 to December 14 at 6 pm. This 5-day downtime is taking place for two reasons: a power shutdown and cluster benchmarking.
The power will once again be switched off in the Greene Building, where the cluster is housed, as part of testing of the electrical system. The actual shutdown will take place early Saturday morning and we need to ensure the cluster is powered off in advance of this. We expect to be able to restart the cluster Monday morning, but it will be kept offline to perform benchmarking tests, which we expect will take three days to complete. As always we will open earlier if all downtime tasks are completed ahead of schedule.
The benchmarking tests are being run to ensure that the cluster is able to perform at expected levels, as well as to provide a baseline against which future tests can be compared to ensure that performance levels are being maintained. These tests were originally part of our pre-launch schedule but were omitted due to lack of time. We have had several faculty request that these tests be run and we agree that it is important enough to take the prolonged downtime.
While service disruptions are never entirely predictable, I am confident that they will become more infrequent as we get farther away from the launch date. The power shutdowns are part of the final phase of the Greene building's construction and while there may be more to come, there won't be many of them and they should stop completely once the building is occupied. Likewise, a benchmarking downtime should be a rare event over the lifetime of the cluster.
This is the first use of the Habanero users list. Welcome to Habanero! Everyone receiving this email has access to the cluster. We will endeavor to keep traffic on this list to a low level, perhaps two or three emails a month, particularly as the service matures and there are fewer events requiring notifications.
