An ongoing dynamic and social process of acting, creating, confirming, facilitating, listening and negotiating between the midwife and the couple, in which they develop a trustful relationship based on mutual respect and integrity. By dialectic learning, an awareness of the changing situation will materialize, making it possible to mobilize the necessary resources and enhance the couples’ own abilities. The woman and her partner are thus participants in a growth process and are enabled to make their own informed choices. The personal significance of becoming parents will then emerge. A nurtur- ing, caring and supporting environment and professional knowledge and skills are necessary components in this process.
