Anyone interested in Britain's industrial future should take a good look at the Engineering Council's report The Changing Mathematical Background of Undergraduate Engineers, prepared by Rosamund Sutherland and Stefano Pozzi. The authors call for better understanding between university lectures in engineering and those responsible for the per- university mathematics curriculum. They say the present system does not foster a match between college mathematics and the needs of university engineering. It seems that many engineering mathematics courses are being tailored to fit the mathematical background of the incoming students.
