The best MPAs, however, hold promise for marine species and ecosystems with their focus on substantial highly protected zones, their use of ecosystem-based management (EBM) principles, and their inclusion as part of larger MPA networks. MMPAs are already showing conservation results for a number of marine mammal populations such as the gray whale and the New Zealand Hector’s dolphin.
