Certainly, there are ways in which theketogenic diet could reduce seizures through a mechanismthat involves ketone bodies themselves acting on neuronalexcitability [7]. However, some children have low tonegligible ketosis while on the ketogenic diet yet areprotected against seizures, whereas others may be inmoderate to even high ketosis but do not achieve seizurecontrol [24]. In experimental models, these effects occur inthe absence of intentionally manipulating ketosis, sowhether the ketogenic diet can reduce seizures through amechanism that includes a change in the plasma and tissuecontent of polyunsaturates, particularly a rise in braindocosahexaenoic acid, requires further investigation [25].
