The cake still adheres to the filter elements, irrespective of the method used for emptying of the filter after filtration, i.e. heel volume filtration or draining by displacement with gas. This permits thorough washing of the cake in situ. The application of spray-wash (pat.) for this step (see above) very significantly reduces the consumption of wash fluid.
