A cardiac murmur if present should include details of location, timing in the cycle, grade, character and be illustrated. If the baby looks and feels healthy but the midwife can hear extra heart sounds that warrant a second opinion, referral should be made to the registrar, with the parent's informed consent. As a result of the registrar's opinion, the parents should be informed that at this moment in time their baby's heart appears healthy or, alternatively, needs further investigation
