In this review there is limited evidence to suggest that unrestricted swimming does not increase risk of AOM in children with ventilation tubes, therefore advising against swimming is no longer necessary. Nor do the use of earplugs or swimming caps or the use of ear drops after swimming appear to offer any protective effect. Unbiased randomised and controlled clinical trials are needed to corroborate that the results of this meta-analysis are correct.
