Most in-person interaction involves communicating nonverbally—from exchanging a smile, to touching, to modulating the sound of one’s voice to convey emotions (e.g., humor or sarcasm). In contrast, many online interaction platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp) are primarily text-based, lacking visual (e.g. facial expression), physical (e.g. touching), and auditory (e.g. voice) nonverbal cues.3 The loss of these nonverbal cues has at least two consequences.
