Gingerbread cookies cut into 3×3″ squares and small stars.
Flood consistency royal icing (my royal icing recipe is available here in the tutorial shop) in white and Wilton Aster Mauve
Tip 3
Wax paper strips ranging in size from 1/4″ to 1/2″ wide
Soft round brush (I like the one from the new Wilton set)
Gold pearl dust (I used Crystal Colors Old Gold, but you can use any shade such as Antique Gold or Blush Gold)
Alcohol or flavored extract
Paint palette or small dish for mixing pearl dust
Begin by icing a square cookie using the pink flood consistency icing and a tip 3. Use the scribe tool to evenly distribute the icing. For full instructions on how to flood a cookie, visit the tutorial shop for a video on flooding with royal icing.
While the icing is still wet, place the wax paper strips diagonally on the cookie.
Leave spaces of varying widths in between the strips. Allow the icing to dry completely. It’s best to place the cookies in front of a fan for at least one hour and then allow them to dry at least another 12 hours.
Once the icing is completely dry, mix the pearl dust with a few drops of alcohol or flavored extract. Lately I’ve been using 160 proof vodka, which works very well for this technique. Read this post on how to make gold royal icing to learn more about painting with gold.
Peel the wax paper strips away from the icing. They should peel right off. If you notice that they are taking some of the icing with them as you pull, the icing isn’t completely dry yet. Allow them it dry a little longer and test it later by pulling the strip back a little bit on the edge. If you’ve waited over 12 hours and the icing still isn’t dry, refer to this post on royal icing troubleshooting tips.
Ice the mini stars with white flood consistency icing and allow the icing to dry completely. Since these are tiny, they should be ready to paint within about 4 hours if you have them in front of fun.
Paint some of the stars completely in gold and add little gold dots to the others.
Here's an easy way to paint perfectly straight stripes using royal icing and wax paper strips. Add a few gold mini stars and these cookies areready for any celebration! Visit my blog for the full list of supplies used in this project
