The research on sports coaches’ mental health and wellbeing is limited; however, general health and organisational psychology researchers have explored these in detail (Ruddick, 2013; Simpson, 2009). The key foci of this research include: empowerment at work facilitating positive wellbeing; emotional exhaustion directly effecting depressive symptoms; higher organisational support leading to better engagement; and control, reward and recognition predicting work engagement. The purpose of this Insights paper is to critically appraise the sport coaching literature with a focus on two key areas: 1) factors that negatively influence mental health and wellbeing; and 2) activities that promote positive mental health and wellbeing.
