In the past five years the development of smartphones and other mobile devices, such as iPads, has meant that Internet access has gone from being temporally available but also spatially available wherever there is a Wi-Fi or 3G/4G signal. The Internet no longer requires its users to be sat down at a desktop or laptop personal computer; mobile devices have taken over. A mobile device enables its user to know where they are (using a map app), what shops, restaurants, etc are nearby, and to make purchases on the move from shops which might be in any location. The use of mobile devices as a payments mechanism is in its infancy, but rapidly growing.
