The challenge for the future is to work on resolving these serious issues identified in the previous chapters. It is difficult to predict exactly what the future will require of the profession and its members. From the contributions in this volume, it is obvious that a change. in the way social work is taught, practiced, and, yes, even how we conductand disseminate research (see Chapter 26) is necessary to meet the anticipated needs of people in the future. Do we as a profession have the willpower to make the necessary changes? Do we have the energy to work for a better fit between our purpose and mission as a profession and what we do as social workers? Are we committed to social justice, equality, and social change? If not, why not? Do we really have a choice? What are our alternatives?
