In this study we have introduced a data- assimilation
system that assimilates sea ice variables in the IcePOM model with the aim to improve the ocean
conditions. All three experiments improved the sea
ice extent forecast. The assimilation also indirectly
improved the non-assimilated parameters.
Assimilating sea ice variables improved the ocean
conditions as expected. It was evident from the
changes in the ocean temperature. Ocean temperature
rose in areas where the model only forecast had over
predicted the sea ice concentration. Out of the three
variables that were assimilated sea ice concentration
assimilation produced results that were more inline
with the observations.
