In conclusion, we would encourage teachers to explore further activities such as this one to raise awareness of variation in English, showcase the global ownership of English, and raise students’ confidence as legitimate users of a global language. McKay (op.cit.) has argued previously that language teachers need to prepare learners for using English in global contexts, and thus need to raise learner awareness of speakers using English that differs from the prescribed norms depicted in most commercial ELT materials. Data from this small classroom project indicate that the use of learner-led research of online, self-access, and library sources succeeded in engaging learners, and led them to critically reflect on Global Englishes.
