About half of the toxic com- pounds entering the lakes come from tropospheric deposition of pesticides, mercury from coal-burning plants, and other toxic chemicals from as far away as Mexico and Russia. A recent survey by Wisconsin biologists found that one fish in four taken from the Great Lakes is unsafe for human consumption. Another problem has been an 80% drop in EPA funding for cleanup of the Great Lakes since 1992.
