4.4. Task 4.4: Design of an optimal industrial work roll cooling device according to the
specifications
As mentioned in WP2, one of the main conclusions of the on-line trials performed in Dunkirk was the
modification of the flow rate of work roll cooling.
Indeed we observed that the kinetic of oxidation at the beginning of the campaign was different on top
and bottom roll, so that incident occurred during the here first finishing mill campaigns. Our objective
was to fasten the oxide formation on the top roll in order to homogenise top and bottom roll, and allow
a quicker formation of the protective Cr oxide layer on the roll.
Considering the mill configuration and the impossibility to apply different top/bottom cooling, we
found out the following work roll optimization: the flow rate of work roll cooling has been decreased
during the 60 first kilometres of the campaign.
