this comparison impressed me with the opposite image between "exuberant streets" and "oppressive negotiation". I never thought walking could be as harsh and difficult as "oppressive negotiation," especially in "cities of exuberant streets." Walking is one of those simple, essential human actions but the author can't comfortably walk the streets of America because he's black. he always had to have the identification documents ready to explain to the police, never allowed to run, not allowed to help others, etc; a lot of principles so as not to be seen as a threat by others. this made me think of the cause of the George Floyd black protest as white police action that over-reacted to black people causing community outrage or black frustration when they had always been suspected of being criminals for long periods of time. In particular, George Floyd was not the first black man to be ridiculously killed.
