But now consider two possibilities. Any one of these relationships can have features that resemble friendships, and friendships might emerge among members in any one of these relationships. In both scenarios, a good delivered in act can be offered as gift, not simply or only as due. It can come as an in-stance of friendship’s love, of its well-wishing and desire for union, not as a requirement of justice. Once delivered and received these acts of love do not set the relationship right, at least not principally. Rather, they deepen the bond that unites the friends and that distinguishes their life together.
